If you are a foreigner and intend to stay in Rio, try the beaches from the “Região dos lagos” (lake region).
Some things you should be advised:
1 – If possible rent a car, you’ll have help, insurance and no maintenance issues if needed.
2 – AirBnB and Tripadvisor are your best friends in this enterprise. Don’t plan to stay in your car on the side road. Go to a hostel or airbnb. It’s not really safe to sleep on the road.
3 – Buy a local telephone chip for internet access (vivo or claro have more covered areas).
4 – Brazil is huge. There are some empty places, plan ahead, download the maps to be used offline.
5 – Most people don’t speak any english. Try to learn to say thanks, help, please, etc.
6 – Try the self service restaurants. It’s cheaper and you can try a little bit before diving into the foods you don’t know.
7 – Have some money (real) with you. Some places don’t accept credit cards. If possible open an account in a brazilian bank to pay with “pix” which is a way to transfer money with your smartphone.
8 – Brazilian health is free. If you need, go to a public hospital and you will not be charged. The private hospitals are very expensive and if this is your choice, have an insurance.
In Rio and São Paulo you will have too much to do if you plan it.
Hope it helps.
